WEEK 9 FORUM

WEEK 9 MEDIA BLOG POST
TOPIC 1 - TURNING PRO -- After reading the short textbook chapter on "Turning Pro,” think about what it takes to pursue photojournalism as a career, or even a serious hobby.
  • What do you see as the next step in your progression as a photojournalist? Is the end of this term the culmination of your photojournalism career, or would you like to continue in some way? Discuss your answer, including reasons pro and con.
  • If you plan to continue, what would you like to do next? What do you have to do to make that happen?
TOPIC 2 -- PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE WEEK:  Think about the famous photographers whose work we examined this term -- Pete Souza, Bob Martin, Sebastiao Salgado, Yousuf Karsh, Ansel Adams, Art Wolfe, Walker Evans, Arthur "Weegee” Fellig, Mathew Brady, Annie Leibovitz, Nigel Barker ... (If you need a reminder, see the write-ups on your classmates' blogs.)
  1. Besides the photographer whose work you presented, which OTHER photographer made the biggest impression on you? Explain why, referring to their style, techniques and favorite photos ...
  2. How could you use the techniques of that photographer in your own photos?

Week 10 Blog

WEEK 10 BLOG

Topic 1
  1. What was the best photo you took this term?
  2. Why did that photo stand out?
  3. Think about your photo skills at the beginning of the term and now. What has changed in your ability or approach to taking and presenting photos? Give some examples.

This is my favorite photo from this term. I heard lots of people in the class talking about this photo and a few people told me how lucky I got with the beautiful sky and clouds. The sky and the clouds in this photo is what completes it, without them I believe it is nothing special.

I definitely think that my overall photo skills have gotten better mainly because I am shooting more photos and anytime you are shooting photos I believe you are getting better. I know many photographers that say the best and only true practice you can get is just go and shoot more photos. This class has been great for me to be able to go out and shoot photos and then come into a "lab" and work on them and take time to view all of the photos instead of having to do it on my own time.

Topic 2

My three goals for Photo Journalism....

1) Understand what photos are the best to draw a reader in...
2) I know it's not a big part of the class but I want to learn photoshop better. I am good at every other editing system but photoshop, just something I would like to improve.
3) Become more comfortable taking photos without feeling shy. I believe this is key in photography.

I feel like I did a good job on achieving these goals. The biggest thing that I think I learned this term is how to confront people and feel confident while doing it. That's a big part of being a photojournalist and being successful while doing it.

It's been a great term and I have had lots of fun with this class. :)

Photo Story

ALEX MOWDY
Follow Alex along his journey of perusing his dream of becoming a professional motorcross rider. In this series Alex trains and practices for a and upcoming race. The race that he has been training for is also featured in this series.

Alex Mowdy straps on his motorcross boots before his practice on May, 27th at Albany MX Park. Alex is training for his race on Sunday the 31st.
During practice Alex Mowdy dials it in his 2012 YZF 450 practice bike. At the end of the practice Alex said "I am feeling very confident about sundays race after this practice today." Alex was constantly putting down very fast lap times.

After the race Alex and his Dad Mike realized that his Motorcycle had a flat rear tire. Here is a photo of Mike changing the flat tire.  In motorcross there are always lots of little things that can go wrong to cause problems in Alex's case he didn't blame anything on the flat rear tire because it was't completely flat at the time of the race. I believe that the low tire made it very hard for Alex to ride his motorcycle to its max performance.
Alex Mowdy now on his 2014 YZ 250 race bike #813 heads into the first corner of the race at Albany MX on the 31st. Alex struggled to get the start he wanted and had to battle back the entire race. Alex battled back and earned a hard fought 3rd place in the race.
Alex Mowdy is ready to leave the track after a great 3rd place finish at Albany MX Park. Alex's next race is the Loretta Lynn regional qualifier at Washougal MX Park on Sunday June 7th.

For this assignment I spent lots of hours at the track following around Alex Mowdy.  I knew what I wanted to have for this assignment and I knew it would take some time. The first thing I did was contact Alex to figure out his schedule and find out when the practices where and when the races where. I found out the first practice was Wednesday May 27th from 3-9 P.M and that the race was Sunday May 31st beginning at 10 A.M and ending around 4 P.M. I ended up spending many hours at the track out in the sun watching motorcross. Overall looking back at this assignment I am very happy with how things all turned out especially telling a story using only 5 photos when this covered many hours and 2 completely different days.

Week 8 Blog

WEEK 8 BLOG

Topic 1: Throughout the years photojournalism has progressed with tremendous strides. I think the biggest change in photojournalism is now we have digital images. Having access to the image right away is huge for photojournalism. When doing photojournalism you want to have instant access to your work so that you can publish it quick. Also one other thing about having digital cameras is the quality that it offers. With all the progress that digital cameras have made it has amazing how easy photojournalism is now days compared to what is used to be. There are many great photographers throughout the history is photojournalism. My personal favorite photojournalist of all time is JOHN GERALD ZIMMERMAN. Zimmerman was one of the first sports photographer and helped shaped modern sports photojournalism. Zimmerman was born on Oct. 30, 1927 and died Aug. 3, 2002. Zimmerman's most famous photo was this one of Wilt Chamberlain on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Zimmerman went on to shoot 107 SI covers.

Topic 2:  For my photo story I plan on shooting photos of a guy I know who races motocross, How I am going to do the story is by getting there early and shooting photos of him before he gets ready to race, Then I plan on shooting photos of him getting ready to race like him getting dressed in his gear and him praying. Then I will shoot photos of him practicing and then I will shoot photos of him actually racing. After he is done racing I will shoot his taking off his gear and probably his dirty bike. This will be at Albany MX this Wednesday the 27th. I am very excited to see what I can do for this assignment.

Week 7 blog forum

BLOG...WEEK 7

1) My sports action subject will most likely be some sort of baseball. I have shot OSU baseball this year a couple times so I might try to go shoot some High School or T-Ball.

2) Next week, try to get out and shoot on Monday if the weather is good.

3) I think the key when shooting sports photos is to be prepared for the action when it happens cause you never know when or where it will happen. Many other type of photos you can even setup, but when it comes to sports you can't. For the overall usually I like to show how many people are there in attendance, for me thats a big things for an overall shot. For the medium it has a wide variety of options. It could just be a single player or maybe depending on what your idea for a close up will be. For the close up I would try to get some facial expression, that is my favorite in sports is when you can capture that. Now many times in sports to capture a emotion you must be close enough and that can be tricky to get a clear close up of emotion when you're farther back.

4) For my primary contact for this assignment will either be the coach if it's younger kids but if it's higher level sports I will just go and shoot it.

WEEK 6 BLOG

Scobel Wiggins...

I have had the pleasure to shoot alongside Scobel at many OSU sporting events.
She definitely enjoys what she does and also does a great job.

The reason this photo stands out to me so much is the focus, I have shot sports for the last 3 years and I know that to get a action shot in focus is extremely tough. This photos isn't just a regular action shot though. This particular photo it is raining in, for anyone who has shot in the rain it can be extremely tough for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is because the camera will want to focus on the rain itself and not the subject you're trying to shoot.  In this photo Scobel Wiggins uses a few techniques and her main one is that she has a great depth of field and has all the focus and clarity on #14 Cody Vaz.
Another great Scobel Wiggins photo, this photo is amazing because of the moment it captures and also how clear everything is.

QUESTIONS FOR SCOBEL...
1) Favorite thing to shoot and why?
2) What is her favorite shot of all time?
3) How much do you use photoshop or any editing software on your photos.

Torres, all of whose limbs have been amputated, went on to come sixth in the 200m finals, but picked up a silver medal in the 150m individual medley and a bronze in the 4x50m relay medley. Swimming has been one of the main sports in the Paralympics since the first games were held in 1960. International swimming rules are followed with just a few exceptions, such as optional platform or in-water starts, but no prostheses or assistive devices are permitted.

Week 5 blog forum

Favorite photo story...
My favorite photo story is the story about the bounty hunters on page 236- 237. There are many reasons why I find this story very interesting to me, the biggest reason is that I am going into law enforcement and this story is basically law enforcement photos. What really got my attention is the action that is going on in all the photos, there is guns being pulled and people getting hand cuffed. The biggest challenges for the photographer in this situation is that they are actually in harms way and in danger of losing their life at anytime. The other problem the photographer had in this situation is that they need to stay out of the way of the bounty hunters. If the photographer gets in the way of the bounty hunter there could be many problems. The visual consistency is that all the photos have action going on, that is very important in these photos. This story is based on bounty hunters and that their job is very active. I can use a couple things from this photo story and use them in mine. The biggest thing for me is to capture faces and emotion, this story does a good job of that and in my photo story I want to do the same.

My photo story...
For my photo story I have thought of a few different things. One of the ideas I had was to shoot some baseball photos and do a story on some of the guys and their biggest plays and moments throughout the year. I think it could turn out really cool if I could get some good action shots and maybe even some at practice and before practice and all of the prep that goes into everything. The other idea I had for a photo story is a story on the graphic design class. The graphic design design class had so drama go on in their class due to they were told they would get a graphic design degree and then where told they wouldn't so this caused some problems. Now the problem is resolved and they will be graduating with another degree similar to a graphic design degree.  For me both of these photos story's will be pretty easy for me because I know quite a bit about both of theses situations and I know that I could make the photo story very intriguing. I would just need to prep out what time and place I would need to shoot photos and where I would have to be. I think I could make this story very cool and am looking forward to it.

Week 4 Forum

TOPIC 1

This week we looked at the National Press Photographers Association Code of Ethics. For me the code of Ethics that stands out the most is #5, it says "While photographing subjects do not intentionally contribute to, alter, or seek to alter or influence events." For me this is huge just cause I know while shooting photos there are many times and opportunities to tell people to do something instead of just shooting what is naturally happening.
The next thing I looked at was "Ideally, Photojournalist Should:" In this section there is a few that caught my eye but the big one was #4, it states basically never to pick a particular political or business involvement that will jeopardize your journalistic  independence. I think this is huge in anything you're doing just because you never want to choose a side that could hurt you in the future and for example in photojournalism it could make you loose you journalistic independence.
The most important thing that I read in all of the code of ethics is  #5 in the actual code of ethics part, "While photographing subjects do not intentionally contribute to, alter, or seek to alter or influence events." This is one that happens all the time and I know that it is a very easy one to break. I know for example I have saw something happen that was amazing and I have asked the subject to try to re-create the event and it never turns out as good as the original anyways but it still is non ethical.

TOPIC 2
Toby did a good job with this photo. I think it turned out very well for a close up and it has great depth of field, also this photo has a good angle.

Really appreciate the work that Josh has been doing. This particular photo captures the moment and is a great all around photo with a great angle and depth of field.

Week 2 Blog Forum

Ideas to find a feature..

1) Take time to stop- If you see a situation that lends itself to a feature. Whenever I see something going on around anywhere I am I always stop to take pictures. I feel like I was born to be a reporter of some sort. I like capturing the moments in life whether they are mine or someone else's.

2) Shoot from a unique vantage- Such as the top of The City Hall's dome, underwater of the towns pool, or beneath the trampoline. I always think it is important to snap photos from a unique perspective so you get the better shot.

Take time to stop...

I always take the time out of my day to stop and take pictures whether it be just a photo on my phone or a photo that I plan to publish online.  With many things if you don't take the time right away when you see something it's too late. Many things with reporting or photography is that you have to capture the moment and if the moment passes you're too late.

My favorite Ryan Gardner of Visual People's photo is...

http://www.visualpeople.com/slir/w625/images/198.jpg
USC's Dominique Byrd brings down a one-handed touchdown grab while Oregon State's Brandon Browner tries to prevent the reception in a fog-enshrouded Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.
The Reason?
I really enjoy sports photos and shoot lots of them. When shooting sports it's all about timing and anticipating. I think if you know the game it helps out a lot. I know the games pretty well so it really helps out while shooting sports. This particular shot is a very good shot and it captures the moment like no other photo.
